Sign Language Interpreter (SLI)
Location: Suffolk, VA

Hours & Schedule

Qualifications
  • National certification from a recognized body such as the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or the National Association of the Deaf (NAD)

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in ASL interpretation, Deaf education, or a related field with coursework focused on educational interpreting

  • Experience interpreting in educational environments, with knowledge of special education practices

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to adapt interpreting styles to individual student needs

Responsibilities
  • Provide real-time interpretation of spoken language into ASL for Deaf or hard-of-hearing students in classroom settings

  • Facilitate communication between students, teachers, and peers, adapting interpreting styles as needed

  • Collaborate with educators and support staff to understand curriculum content and instructional methods

  • Assist in developing IEPs for Deaf or hard-of-hearing students by providing input on communication needs

  • Monitor student engagement and understanding, addressing any communication barriers

  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional and ethical standards

  • Participate in ongoing professional development to stay current with interpreting practices and educational trends
