Job Description

Position Summary A statewide search, with a focus on Southern California, is currently underway for a legal professional to join the City of Thousand Oaks as an Assistant City Attorney. Specific municipal legal experience as a generalist in at least two or three of the following areas will be advantageous: code enforcement, human resource-related matters (i.e., employee relations, grievances, investigations/discipline), Public Records Act, Public Contracts Code, and Political Reform Act. Land use and real estate legal experience will be an added plus for top candidates. The City Attorney’s office currently includes the City Attorney, three Assistant City Attorneys, one Senior Legal Assistant/Office Manager, and one Administrative Clerk. This position reports to the City Attorney and may be assigned legal work from the City Attorney or by other attorneys in the Office, under the overall direction of the City Attorney. Based on the experience of the candidate selected, assignments may include providing legal services and counsel on a wide range of legal issues for City departments, City Council, City Planning Commission, and other boards, commissions, and committees. Compensation and Schedule The City is prepared to offer a salary in the range of $177,952.32 to $266,928.69 annually, DOQ. City Hall operates on a 9/80 schedule. The City provides flexibility in the schedule and hybrid-remote working opportunities after 6 months of employment. The City also offers an attractive benefits package including CalPERS retirement. Qualifications and Prior Experience Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be graduation from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association with a Juris Doctorate degree and 7 years of experience in the practice of municipal/government law. Experience gained may be from local government (i.e. city, county, or special district) or alternatively, from a municipal law firm providing legal services to local government clients. Current membership in the State Bar of California is also required.
